Derek AEL, a talented videographer and storyteller. Derek has graciously agreed to share his number one business tip with us tonight. Thanks so much, Derek!
Derek began by sharing his personal journey and emphasizing that he’s still learning himself. He humorously mentioned that he won’t truly know if he’s done things right until he’s gone and his grandchildren reflect on his legacy. Despite his modesty, Derek’s experiences offer valuable lessons.
Growing up in a remote island in Portugal, Derek’s passion for storytelling was evident from a young age. He would turn anecdotes and jokes into plays with his friends, showing an early knack for directing. Despite the lack of formal film schools in his hometown, Derek’s passion never wavered. In his 20s, he took a bold step by moving to London to study film.
The journey wasn’t without its hurdles. Derek started out working as a waiter to support himself, but a pivotal moment came when he met Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino’s advice was the catalyst Derek needed to enroll in film school. This step led to further opportunities, including meeting his wife and relocating to Australia.
Now, with 13 years of experience as a professional filmmaker and storyteller, Derek’s advice is simple yet profound: find something you genuinely enjoy doing and stick with it. He emphasized that perseverance is key—if you keep at it long enough, people will eventually recognize your passion and be willing to pay for it.
Derek’s story is a testament to the power of following your passion and staying committed, even when the journey is tough. His advice is especially relevant for those who may be contemplating a career change or struggling to find their niche. Sometimes, taking a break and exploring other interests, like planting a garden, can help renew your passion and perspective. However, the core message remains: pursue what you love, and with persistence, success will follow.
Thank you, Derek, for sharing your inspiring story and valuable advice. It’s a reminder that passion, combined with perseverance, can lead to fulfilling and successful careers.
Thanks again to everyone for being here and to Joe Hanlin for sponsoring tonight’s event. Your support and engagement make these gatherings truly special.
